About Ushiosoft
Ushiosoft is an independent software engineering firm in Calgary, Canada, run by Tony Cheng, P.Eng. It takes on production software, Web3 compliance infrastructure, and AI inside real operations, for companies that cannot afford a rewrite. Engagements worldwide.
How the firm works
Every engagement starts with a conversation about the problem, not the technology. If Ushiosoft isn’t the right fit, you’ll hear that first.
What follows is a written proposal, fixed in scope. New work usually begins as a proof of concept on a fixed budget, so the cost is known before anything is built and the result is something you can evaluate. A longer engagement, once the fit is proven, can move to time and materials.
You work directly with the engineer who designs and builds the system. There is no account layer, no handoff, and no junior team behind the pitch. Ushiosoft would rather tell you a thing is a bad idea early than build it politely.
Every engagement ends in handover: documentation and a codebase your own people can run, not a dependency on the vendor.
The principal
Tony Cheng is a licensed professional engineer with fifteen years spent almost entirely in domains where a defect is not a bug report. The first five were in embedded and real-time systems, building safety-critical monitoring and control for industrial equipment. Five years followed on one of Canada’s largest electronic medical records and clinical consultation platforms, building services and the infrastructure pipelines underneath them.
The most recent five years were at a global cryptocurrency exchange, in compliance engineering: leading name screening and FATF Travel Rule infrastructure, with daily ongoing monitoring across hundreds of millions of users, a screening provider migration completed with zero downtime on a platform that never stops, and regulatory onboarding across ten international entities. In the final year the work turned to putting AI into those operations: agentic development tooling that other engineering teams adopted, Model Context Protocol servers over internal platforms, and automated investigation workflows whose output reaches regulators.

The name
Ushio (潮) means tide. A tide is a versatile stream: it takes the shape of whatever shore it meets, which is how the practice works, because no two clients need the same system. It is also the most predictable force in nature, computed decades ahead in tables that ships still steer by. Adaptable and dependable are not usually the same promise. That is the one this name makes, and the one the work has to keep.
